Do katanas have pommels?

Yes, katanas do have pommels. The pommel, also known as the "kashira" in Japanese, is the cap or knob found at the end of the handle (tsuka) of a katana or any other sword. It serves several purposes:

  1. Balance: The pommel helps to balance the weight of the blade, ensuring the sword feels well-balanced and comfortable to wield. It adds weight to the handle end, helping to counterbalance the blade's weight and improving the overall feel and maneuverability of the sword.
  2. Grip Retention: The pommel also assists in keeping the handle wrapping (tsuka-ito) in place and prevents it from unraveling. It helps maintain a secure grip on the sword during combat.
  3. Aesthetic and Design: Pommels can be artistically designed and crafted to match the overall aesthetic and style of the katana. They can be simple or ornate, featuring various motifs or decorations that contribute to the sword's appearance.

While the pommels of katanas tend to be smaller and less pronounced compared to some Western sword designs, they still play an important functional and aesthetic role in the construction of the sword.
