What is a Nagamaki sword?

A nagamaki is a type of Japanese sword that combines the characteristics of both a sword and a polearm. It originated during the medieval period in Japan and is known for its long handle and blade.

The nagamaki features a handle that is significantly longer than that of a regular sword, typically measuring around 2 to 3 feet (approximately 0.6 to 0.9 meters) in length. The blade is mounted at the end of the handle and is usually curved, similar to a katana or a tachi.

The design of the nagamaki allowed for two-handed use, providing increased reach and leverage for powerful strikes. The extended handle allowed the wielder to grip the weapon with both hands, enabling greater control and maneuverability in combat.

The blade of a nagamaki is typically sharp and designed for cutting and slashing. The length and curve of the blade, combined with the two-handed grip, provided versatility in both offensive and defensive techniques. The nagamaki was effective in close-quarters combat and was particularly favored by samurai warriors on foot.

The nagamaki is considered a relatively rare weapon, and surviving examples are highly valued. They are often admired for their craftsmanship and represent a unique fusion of sword and polearm characteristics. Today, nagamaki swords are primarily seen in collections, museums, and martial arts training rather than being used in actual combat.
