Is a tanto a shortsword?

A tanto is not typically classified as a shortsword. While the specific definitions and classifications may vary, a shortsword is generally characterized by having a longer blade than a dagger but shorter than a full-sized sword. It typically falls between the length of a dagger and a standard one-handed sword.

The tanto, on the other hand, is considered a short knife or dagger. It typically has a straight blade with a sharp point and is shorter in length compared to swords or shortswords. Tanto blades typically range from around 15 to 30 centimeters (6 to 12 inches) in length.

The primary design and purpose of a tanto are focused on stabbing and thrusting rather than cutting or slashing. Tanto blades were historically used for close-quarters combat, self-defense, or as utility knives in Japan.

While tanto blades may have similarities with shortswords in terms of blade length and potential use in combat, they are generally categorized as daggers or short knives due to their shorter length and design intent.
