What is the longest katana?

The katana, being a traditionally standardized sword, does not typically exceed a certain length due to its intended use and design principles. The standard length of a katana typically falls within a range of approximately 60-80 centimeters (24-31 inches), with variations depending on the specific era, school, and personal preferences.

However, there are rare and exceptional cases where a katana may exceed the typical length range. Some exceptionally long katana are referred to as "Ōdachi-style katana" or "Nagamaki katana." These swords have longer blades that can measure over 100 centimeters (39 inches) or even approach two meters in length.

It's important to note that such longer katana blades were not commonly used in regular combat or by individual samurai. They were often ceremonial or symbolic swords associated with special occasions, displays of power, or as prestigious heirlooms. Surviving examples of longer katana can be found in museums or private collections, and they represent unique and rare specimens within the realm of Japanese swords.
