“Knowledge is a weapon. I intend to be formidably armed.” ― Terry Goodkind

When did katanas become illegal in Japan?

Cut off in September 2021, katanas were not outright illegal in Japan. However, there were strict laws governing their possession and manufacture. The Japanese Sword Law requires that all swords (including katanas) owned in Japan must be registered with the local police. Additionally, only licensed artisans are allowed to produce such swords.

There are restrictions on the lengths of blades that can be legally possessed without special permits, but traditional katanas, often considered part of Japan's cultural heritage, are not outright banned. Please check the most recent laws and regulations for the most up-to-date information.
