How many kata are in iaido?

Iaido is a Japanese martial art focused on the drawing and striking with a sword in one fluid motion. It emphasizes mindfulness, discipline, and precision in executing techniques. The specific number of kata (forms or patterns) in iaido can vary depending on the style or school being practiced. Different iaido schools may have their own unique set of kata, and the number of kata can range from a few to dozens or more.

For example, the Muso Shinden Ryu iaido, one of the most popular iaido styles, consists of twelve core kata known as "Seitei-gata" or "ZKR" (Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei). These kata were standardized in the 1960s to provide a common set of forms for practitioners across different iaido schools.

Other iaido styles, such as Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu or Hoki Ryu, may have a more extensive curriculum with a larger number of kata, which could range from twenty to over fifty.

It's important to note that the practice of iaido focuses on mastering the kata and understanding their principles rather than simply accumulating a large number of forms. The emphasis is on refining technique, mindfulness, and cultivating a deep understanding of the principles and philosophy behind the art.
