What swords are used in Iaido?

In Iaido, practitioners typically use two main types of swords for training and practice: the Iaito and the Shinken.

  1. Iaito: The Iaito is a non-sharpened practice sword specifically designed for Iaido training. It closely resembles a traditional Japanese katana in terms of shape, size, and weight. The blade of an Iaito is typically made of aluminum alloy, zinc-aluminum alloy, or similar materials. It allows practitioners to perform the techniques of Iaido safely, without the risk of accidental injury. Iaito swords are used by beginners, intermediate, and advanced students for regular training and kata practice.
  2. Shinken: Shinken refers to a sharp, live-blade sword used in Iaido practice by experienced practitioners. Shinken swords are fully functional and typically made of high-quality carbon steel. They are crafted by skilled swordsmiths and can be quite expensive. Shinken swords are used for advanced training and are often reserved for special occasions, such as demonstrations, exams, or higher-level practice.

It's important to note that the use of Shinken swords requires a high level of skill, responsibility, and safety precautions due to their sharpness and potential for serious injury. Beginners and those still learning the basics of Iaido primarily use Iaito swords to ensure a safe and controlled training environment.
